An evening at the symphony

Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra were in place on stage, as Grieghallen Concert hall filled up with an unusually young audience. In cooperation with Study Bergen, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra invited students in Bergen to a musical evening in the city’s main concert hall.

Outside Grieghallen after the concert: Miguel Inchautegui from Peru, Marcelino Alberdi and Adres Cuari Buendia, both fra Spania.

Commissioner Christine Meyer held the opening speech and welcomed all present, but in particular the international students who had made their way to the concert. A short presentation of Mahler’s 5th symphony was then given by Lorenz Reitan.

The evening was then masterfully led by Conductor John Storgårds and the audience received the moving musical experience they had been hoping for. At the end of the symphony, the audience awarded the orchestra with a standing ovation.

Outside of Grieghallen after the concert, we met a group of Spanish speaking young men.

Miguel Inchaustegui from Peru studies Geography at the University of Bergen (UiB) and greatly appreciated Bergen Student Concert.

- I enjoyed it immensely. This is my second year as a student in Bergen, and I have now been lucky enough to attend Bergen Student Concert two times.

Marcelino Alberdi moved to Bergen in August to study Computer Science at UiB. In his hometown in Spain, there is also a symphony orchestra. Like Miguel he appreciated the chance to experience a free classical concert in Bergen, but he admitted that not all the movements were as engrossing.

- The third movement was a bit slow for my liking.

- The last section was the best! Added his friend Andres Cuari Buendia. It was amazing!
